Tentative race season planned

Training is coming along. I have incorporated somewhat of a routine for December which is considered my semi-off season training.

Definitely feeling the carry over of my fitness from training semi-consistently from March 2008 up until now.

Very excited to think that come March of 2009 will be my first full year of endurance/triathlon related training. I am very optimistic of things to come.

Finally got back into the water again and feeling quite good. I've layed the preliminary "endurance" foundation & now focus on increasing my efficiency/technique with my first swim coach.

I'm excited to see If we can work together & achieve my swimming goals for the 2009 race season.

My tentative race season for this year is as follows:

1)Wildflower 1/2 Ironman- May 3rd
2) Wasa Olympic distance triathlon- June 13th
3) Okotoks foothills charity sprint triathlon- July 4th
4) Calgary 1/2 Ironman- August 2nd
5) Olympic distance world championships/Gold Coast Australia- Sept 13th

Nationals in Kelowna is the even more so tentative race that I may forsee myself racing.

That depends on where my fitness is at leading up to the Calgary 1/2 ironman.

my motto right now- "back up the intensity jevro, race season isn't until May"

slight setback

Been on/off sick the past couple weeks. Potential thoughts were strept throat but that has been ruled out. Gargle mouthwash, cough medicine, anti inflammatory for the sore throat & almost on the road to complete recovery.

Every athlete dreads even the idea of getting sick. It sets back your performance & presents a slight amount of depression/frustration that an athlete has to stickhandle mentally.

I have been able to get a few strong straining sessions with the birdman that have kept me somewhat on track.

Finally incorporated a power meter in with the bike which gives a steady focus on consistently maintaining power.

Looking forward very much to gettting back in the pool, riding the trainer, & running some outside fish creek runs!

Let's Keep it going

Enjoying some dinner In Kona with Dianne, Brad, myself & Ashnoor.

Looking forward to racing on my machine in 2009

Back in Calgary now & keeping the training going.

Tempo run the other day @ the YMCA for 50 minutes feeling good.

Biked Today for about 1hr 15 min & it felt good to get back in the saddle after a week at the lava fields.

Went to see the naturopath & learned some valuable information about my body & what should be going into it based on my food sensitivity. Very insightful.

Trying to make yoga a once a week thing to help with flexibility & core strength.

Feeling good & putting money in the bank with consistent yet casual training in the off season.

A captivating experience

Just got back from the Ironman world championships in Hawaii. It was a captivating experience to say the least. I was down there for a week & was able run from the energy lab into town & other parts of the run course, swim in the amazing swim start location, & got good idea of what the bike course is all about. The weather change was quite a shock for my body. Brad my coach/mentor/coworker & I ran every day we were down there to explore this unbelievable scenery. Us & the ladies stayed at some amazing hotels, ate some incredibly tasty Mahi Mahi/Catch of the day entrees & it was very pleasing. An amazing trip.

The event was extraordinary. To think that the race begins & 6:45a.m. for the professional triathletes & later in the day around 10p.m. when it's pitch black, age group athletes are coming down Alihi Drive to the finish line. It was awe inspiring & magical to see the expressions on all of these athletes faces throughout the entire event.

To see all the pro triathletes in person as opposed to Ironman DVDS was great.

Keep on Truckin

Hey gang,

Steady as she goes lately for training. Did the corporate challenge last Sunday with a time of 40:18. I am happy with the time considering a buddy of mine was told a navigation watch tripped it at 10.6km.

Been riding to work a lot lately about 80km round trip which is a nice ride. The cyclocross last tuesday was some intense threshold heart rate training which I am okay with. My body is feeling stronger as the days go on & the only issue as of late is maximum breathing capability.
Wether it be a slight muscle tear in the chest or increased volume of training I am unsure. I am keeping a close eye on it & hope to get a handle on it.

I plan on riding to work at least 3 days of week even as we creep into the fall which would be a comfortable 240km of biking per week (not including any other leisure rides). 3-5 runs a week a should be possible as I want to keep gradually building my pace.

Getting back in the pool at a steady rate will be my next focus. Consistently balancing the three disciplines is the significant task.

some good mileage

Been up to a lot of riding as of late.

Went to compete in cyclocross racing at the thorncliffe community centre on Tuesday evening.
It was harsh but I felt strong & look forward to the next series on Sept 16th.

Biked Wed for 1hour 20 min & ran after work for 40 min. incorporated speed work in for 10 minutes.

Biked Today with my co worker for about 3 1/2 hours. Started in midnapore & ended up @ Calgary cycle soaked from the rain. Great ride, heart rate felt good (within my aerobic base limit) rode the cross bike today as well!

Gearing up for the corporate challenge 10km coming up on Sunday morning. I'm excited & shooting for my first every sub 40 minute 10km.

Pumped to build my aerobic base before next race season.

Let's get started

Hey everyone! well no one yet! as will ferrel says to his wife in the movie old school 'WERE STREAKING. DOWN THROUGH THE QUADS & INTO THE GYMNASIUM... EVERYONES DOING IT!!

Haha. Well here I am with my own blog.

My name is Jevon Almond & I plan to use this blog to provide updates to whoever wants them & future inspiration for myself.

The main updates on my blog are going to be primarily regarding the sport of Triathlon. It's funny because when I was younger I would have never imagined being into this gruelling sport. I played hockey for 10 years & began working ("stepping into that real world")

Since getting into the sport of triathlon, my passion is beginning to shine through in a big way.

Now part of me is potentially considering taking on this sport full time.

Triathlon? what the hell is that? Well for those of you who know what it is that's awesome! The reasoning behind the naming of this blog "thesponge" is simple. It's the summary of my ambitious nature as a triathlete. It's amazing how dedicated my mind & body are becoming towards this sport. Watching Simon whitfield win olympic gold, or Peter Reid winning his 1st, 2nd or 3rd ironman world championship title are truly inspiring to see. I know i'm not even close to that level & at this point only aspire to be, but every time I watch glory be given to a triathlete, I soak it up & put it inside me. I don't know where it's being all stored yet, but I am confident it will reveal itself in the future.

My training as a triathlete is going quite well & I am finally starting to understand my body. Currently jevro is entering the base training stage after 4 races in 2008.

Vancouver world championships, the Sylvan lake 1/2 ironman, & Nationals in Kelowna were great experiences for 2008. These races have shown me things to improve on while I gear up for the next year of racing.

The greatest part of triathlon is when your mind perceives the pain your body is going through as pleasure.
