overcome obstacles

Although this hasn't been the most successful season in terms of getting in all the required training I still view it as a success.

Organizing & structuring a 6-7 day training week around your family, career & significant other can be very difficult & somewhat stressful on different levels.

I have had lower back issues since December of last year that i haven't been able to shake off at the moment. This has been extremely discouraging in terms of maintaining consistent workouts as it always sits in the back of your mind & you wrestle with the potential to further the injury with your sub-conscious mind.

However, with that said I have still been able to build a great base this year & I feel my swimming & biking have really come along. Now for the run it's just a matter of logging some long runs in before the great white north 1/2 ironman in July.

The golden triangle 330km 3 days of biking was awesome. the first day was a struggle up the enormous hill into radium. The second day the 4 of us led by birdman set an awesome pace finishing the 90km bike ride in 2 hours 27 minutes averaging right around 38km/hour on road bikes. A great feeling for a second hard day of riding. The third day birdman left me in the dust as most of the day was climbing hills & he rides like a trojan on hills. I rode at my heartrate threshold not knowing what terrain I was going to run into. I felt incredible for the 4 hour 15 minute ride. Getting involved in some drafting with a few groups of cyclists was great for my experience as this is the first of many encounters to come for me.

I am looking forward to the Wasa triathlon coming up & I consider it to be a training race as I don't think I will be 100% at that point. This is great because I don't have any expectations other than to complete the race & feel strong at all three legs.

Great white north & Calgary are coming up & I have to be strong mentally in order to block out this unusual injury & get the training done.

re- group

Transition in Job, new car, hockey playoffs, taking care of a disabled elderly couple, lower back issues. All excuses!!!

I have simply not been myself lately. I am grateful that this has happened now so I can learn how to channel my discipline & work ethic.

Training has been minimal at best & I am frustrated with my psyche lately but cannot quite put a pin on the exact reason for the lack of consistency.

Nothing is perfect is the summary of my concerns for the time being.

I know how Jevon ticks & I keep assuring myself this plateau or slump is only short term & I will snap out of the "average training" routine

on another note, birdman is gonna rock this year. went out for a early season bike & I have never seen him so fit. If I was a betting man, I would say he will be ready to lay it on the line in any race this year.

until then,

gearin up

Hey folks,

Training volume is creeping up at the moment. Back to 5-6 days a week training & the volume is taking a bit of a toll on the body. Lower back is feeling better but definitely still tight.

Swam a solid 500m TT in the pool today & although my pace was too quick out of the gate and I fell off a few seconds at the end I feel a lot stronger than last year.

followed by an hour bike on the trainer then a 30 minute tempo run.

I have made an amendment to my race season. I've decided that the timing & budget are not going to correlate well enough this year to go to Australia. I'm actually not disappointed but rather excited that I can focus that much more on the Alberta races coming down the tube.

Wasa, Great white, & Calgary are going to be my main focus this year & I may slip another in between or after depending how jevro is feeling.

the trainwagon

Ahh yes routine is starting to emerge into my life again when it comes to training. Having a routine I believe helps me be a more complete person. You are more alert with your priorities, obligations, goals, thoughts & mostly you realize how valuable time actually is.

Lower back has been irritating to say the least, nice part is it doesn't directly affect me during training. Just in between it has been irritating & slightly painful. Had a few massage therapy sessions done on it & it still seems really tight. I have decided that in order to potentially fulfill my training goals for this season I must do the unthinkable.....

see a chiropractor!!!

I understand that these professionals endure years of education & other medical knowledge requirements, but the thought of such a short session of cracking/shifting/snapping is a bit of a concern for me.

We'll see how it goes & if there is no success we still have other should you say typically non-conventional ideas ( ART/IMS/ACCU)

Been in the pool about 6 days a week loading up the volume maintaining 50s on 44 for 2km workouts & beginning to work in 100s/200s on 1:28/2:56 with the birdman.

It's time

Happy new years everyone!!!

The past few months have been quite busy with Christmas, work & all kinds of other events/obligations. I have noticed that for a limited time triathlon was not my top priority. It was very noticeable that my decision for time off was challenging my determination & ambitious nature towards triathlon.
However, I link it directly to distraction & forced disciplinary ignorance. In some circumstances I caught my mind thinking that i should be training. "cmon jevon start your regime!!" But i didn't stray from the necessary break I believe my body needed before I creep into February. I feel I have built my first solid base & am excited to make the transition into anaerobic/aerobic 6-7 days a week training.

On a further note my confirmed races are the following:

Wasa June 13th
Great White north 1/2 ironman July 5th
Calgary 70.3 - August 2nd
Australia - Sept 13

Tentative race season planned

Training is coming along. I have incorporated somewhat of a routine for December which is considered my semi-off season training.

Definitely feeling the carry over of my fitness from training semi-consistently from March 2008 up until now.

Very excited to think that come March of 2009 will be my first full year of endurance/triathlon related training. I am very optimistic of things to come.

Finally got back into the water again and feeling quite good. I've layed the preliminary "endurance" foundation & now focus on increasing my efficiency/technique with my first swim coach.

I'm excited to see If we can work together & achieve my swimming goals for the 2009 race season.

My tentative race season for this year is as follows:

1)Wildflower 1/2 Ironman- May 3rd
2) Wasa Olympic distance triathlon- June 13th
3) Okotoks foothills charity sprint triathlon- July 4th
4) Calgary 1/2 Ironman- August 2nd
5) Olympic distance world championships/Gold Coast Australia- Sept 13th

Nationals in Kelowna is the even more so tentative race that I may forsee myself racing.

That depends on where my fitness is at leading up to the Calgary 1/2 ironman.

my motto right now- "back up the intensity jevro, race season isn't until May"

slight setback

Been on/off sick the past couple weeks. Potential thoughts were strept throat but that has been ruled out. Gargle mouthwash, cough medicine, anti inflammatory for the sore throat & almost on the road to complete recovery.

Every athlete dreads even the idea of getting sick. It sets back your performance & presents a slight amount of depression/frustration that an athlete has to stickhandle mentally.

I have been able to get a few strong straining sessions with the birdman that have kept me somewhat on track.

Finally incorporated a power meter in with the bike which gives a steady focus on consistently maintaining power.

Looking forward very much to gettting back in the pool, riding the trainer, & running some outside fish creek runs!
